The esports community has received another shocking news after one of the legendary esports teams, Counter Logic Gaming (CLG), was rumored to be closing all operations and laying off all their staff.
This news was first spread by LoL enthusiast, Travis Gafford, who revealed the fate of CLG through his personal YouTube on April 3, 2023. According to Travis, CLG will soon take over all esports operations and will lay off all their staff starting April 6, 2023, including CEO Greg Kim.
CLG is an esports team that has been a staple of the North American regional scene for over a decade, which is a very long time for the esports industry.
CLG has several divisions of leading esports games, ranging from CS:GO, Call of Duty, and the most accomplished League of Legends. Unfortunately, all of these divisions will be disbanded and the CLG name will only be a memory.
Following the news of CLG's disbandment, NRG Esports became the first esports team to intend to buy CLG's League of Legends team. If they do, NRG will return to participate in the LCS after a hiatus since 2016.
Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) was acquired by Madison Square Garden Company, a company best known for their ownership of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, in 2017.
Prior to that, CLG was an independent team that premiered in the first season of the NA LCS in 2013 and was renowned as one of the most competitive teams in the league.
With mass layoffs imminent, there's a lot of uncertainty for CLG staff and players. As of now, it hasn't been announced what the main reason is for CLG being disbanded for good.
